Shaboom! It’s Friday Banger time, and the three picks for today are utter belteroos, even by Gigantic standards. The first pick comes via AU Magazine Editor Chris Jones. He dropped this track across to me a few weeks back and I’ve been looking for an excuse to blog it ever since. I feel like there is no better place for it than in the Friday Bangers. It’s ‘The Hope’ by Scuba, and it has a serious kick to it.

Scuba – The Hope (right click to download)

This next track is one that I’ve just started playing out recently. It’s ‘Get Naked’ by Fatboy Slim, Riva Starr and Beardyman. I played it in the office on Monday morning and Andrew pointed out that it lifts wholesale from DHS ‘House Of God’. I don’t know why they haven’t called it a remix, but whatever, it has go serious beef.

Fatboy Slim, Riva Starr & Beardyman – Get Naked (right click to download)

And the last tune I’m posting up today is Redlight ‘Get Out My Head’. It’s taken a while to grow on me, probably because it is a touch commercial. Not that I don’t like commercial stuff, I do, it just sometimes takes me a little longer to come round to it than straight up electro bangers. Lodged in my noggin now though.

Redlight – Get Out My Head (right click to download)

Hope you like the bangers today. And don’t forget, the club is on tonight, so if you’d like on the guest let hit us up via the Facebook or Twitter.

I thought I’d give this blog post a cliched title, seeing as it’s both very late to be doing it, and it’s Valentines day. I’ve decided to just fire up a load of tunes that have love in the title, from bands that I like. If you want a well thought out, alternative Valentines Day playlist then check out the AU Magazine piece here. Brian Coney put it together and it’s great, he put loads of thought into it. All I did was type ‘love’ into my iTunes search box and pick out the best ones. Still, they’re all good tunes, so dry your eyes or whatever.

First up is a pretty old track from the stupidly named and since evaporated We Smoke Fags. I only let them away with the dumb moniker since they wrote this brilliant post-punk/electro funk beast of a tune. Still kicks.

We Smoke Fags – Canape Of Love (right click to download)

Next we have another bunch of post-punk, funky heroes. I should have made this blog entry all about post-punk stuff shouldn’t I? Too late now. ANYWAY, it’s Friendly Fires and ‘Lovesick’. You know what’s sick? This tune. SICK.

Friendly Fires – Lovesick (right click to download)

And the last track is a bit of a mellow, almost romantic wee ditty. It’s not post-punk, but it is electro, so it fits in with my *personal brand. It’s Cut Copy ‘Feel The Love’, and it’s from their never-aging, timeless, eternally awesome second album In Ghost Colours.

Cut Copy – Feel The Love (right click to download)

Hope you enjoy the love tunes. Big big love tunes.

*Please don’t take the use of the term ‘personal brand’ seriously. I just wanted to use it in some sort of conversation today. I succeeded.

I was DJing in the Ballroom of Lavery’s on Saturday night, as I do every third week, but this time round I thought I would try something different. I spent a good while gathering new tunes in advance. I decided I was going to focus on really good quality slow groove disco stuff at the start, and steadily build it up to more banging tunes later on. I figured if I threw in some big pop numbers as well then the floor should be jumping all night.

It worked really well. People started shimmying on the dance floor as soon as they came in. I stuck to my guns and played tasty beats right from the start. I gave a bunch of new tunes an airing, and they went down really well. This track was a definite standout. It features two artists I’m a big fan of, Peaches and Munk, teaming up with each other to create a cool take on the old 80s r’n'b classic ‘You Can’t Run From My Love’.

Peaches, Munk – You Can’t Run From My Love (right click to download)

The set got pretty banging, pretty quickly, so I took it on a wee detour into indie land and played some Weezer, M83, Black Keys and Django Django to break it up a bit. Within no time I was back to firing out the heavy beats again though. I’d been wondering if I could get away with playing some proper techno in the set, so I decided to try it out by dropping this tune in-between an Adele remix and some LMFAO. I figured that if I got the dance floor filled, I could take a chance by playing something different, and then if it didn’t work I would have a huge track lined up to build the floor up again. I needn’t have worried though, everyone went for this tune in a big way! I was stunned as it’s proper techno.

Gesaffelstein – Control Movement (right click to download)

At about 1.40am the sad news came through that Whitney Houston had passed away. As a tribute I played ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ as the last song of the night. As expected everyone went crazy. Such a shame, but the perfect way to end the evening.

Hello there. You might have noticed that the blog was pretty quiet last week. It was weird, there just wasn’t anything around that I was dying to post about. Got a few wee beauties lined up for the next wee while though.

First off, GIGANTIC on Friday night was blinding fun. It was crazy at the start of the night. There were a few birthday parties of girls in the club, and then a massive hen party arrived. At one point there were about fifty people in the club, and only five of them were guys. That included two barmen and myself! Of course, the hen party were melters who kept asking for David Guetta and Calvin Harris non-stop, and asking me to give shout-outs on my non-existent mic.

I didn’t change what I would normally play, so they got sick of me pretty quickly and left. Probably to the M Club or something. They did drag Donal Rainey onto the dance floor against his will. At least that was entertaining. I really enjoyed the set I played early on – Foals, Phoenix, The Whitest Boy Alive, Grimes and more all got an airing. This was one of my favourite songs of the whole set, as I rarely play it. I never realised just how funk it is until I heard it over the big system. It’s TV On The Radio ‘Crying’.

TV On The Radio – Crying (right click to download)

And another track that stood out on the night is this classic from Santigold. I’m posting this up as Garth Philpott came up and asked me what it was. I figure that everyone needs this track in their lives. I’ve been listening to a sampler of her new album, and it’s sounding great.

Santigold – Creator (right click to download)

Aside from these tracks, the highlight of my night was Cath, Shauna and their friends going absolutely buck mental to all the 90s dance music I played towards the set. It was all sparked by Cath asking for N Trance, and I guess you could say things spiralled out of control from there.

All in all, a great night.

OK, we’re cutting in one for a New Music Monday, so I’m going to make this a quickie. The fact that it’s quick doesn’t detract from the quality of the tunes though. They’re all whoppers today. Now, I know that these aren’t all super new songs, but I’ve only discovered them recently myself. Perhaps I should rename this post type ‘New To Me Music Monday’.

I’m going to post Howler ‘Back Of Your Neck’ first as it has been stuck in my head all day. This is probably because it was on the radio earlier, and once you hear it the tune has a tendency to wedge itself it your brain. I don’t know why, but it makes me think of the 1950s. Go figure.

Howler – Back Of Your Neck (right click to download)

The next song I’m posting up is ‘Default’ by Django Django. And why am I post this song up next (apart from the fact that it is class)? That’s right, because I heard it on the radio earlier! Flip me 6 Music was good today. This band are going to be HUGE, and their new album is just out. Get all over it. Aw yeah.

Django Django – Default (right click to download)

And the last track of today’s New Music Monday is ‘It’s Real’ by Real Estate. You can’t beat a good ‘Woah oh oh’ in a tune, and ‘It’s Real’ has a belter. It’s not madly original, but it is really good.

Real Estate – It’s Real (right click to download)

As always, if you like any of these tracks, go and find out more about the bands, and more importantly, buy their albums/EPs/singles/t-shirts/whateva.

Phew. It has taken until now to recover from the awesomeness of the weekend. First off, Friday night at Gigantic was another busy sesh. Bit of a random night, but there were plenty of regulars down giving it stacks, which was nice. The first track I’m posting up was one that I started to play for Gillian Gillespie, but that randomly cut out before the end. Gah! It’s a great track that I’ve been looking to post up anyway, so this was a good excuse. It’s M.I.A. ‘Bad Girls’.

M.I.A. – Bad Girls (right click to download)

There were so many highlights from Saturday night that it’s almost impossible to pick one. It was just one of the most enjoyable DJ sets I’ve played in a long time. There were a ton of good requests, and no one even asked for Rihanna all night. I think that’s the first time in about two years that someone hasn’t requested the popstress! Mental. Anyway, Jay Z ‘Big Pimpin’ stuck out as a highlight of the set, so I figured it would be good to post.

Jay-Z Feat UGK – Big Pimpin’ (right click to download)

And what the hell, I figured I’d just post the whole set up below so that you can critique it yourself. Such fun to play.
We haven’t posted up very many remixes on GIGANTIC in the past while, so I figured today would be a good day to put together a Friday Bangers special, consisting of nothing but fresh new remixes for your listening pleasure. I’m going to post up the remixes in the order in which they would most likely be played in at the club.

This first remix is of a track that has been getting a fair caning in Gigantic for ages now. It’s SBTRKT ‘Hold On’, and it has been reworked by Them Jeans. It doesn’t totally mess with the original, but more adds a few extra layers of beef. I find this tasty, despite being a vegetarian. Go figure.

SBTRKT – Hold On (Them Jeans Remix) (right click to download)

The next remix was actually flagged up via our Facebook page by Lavery’s itself. Well, it was flagged up by the Lavs Facebook account, which most likely means it was Dave Frecknall who picked it out. Anyway, you probably don’t care about that, but what you should care about is that this is Aeroplane remixing The Rapture ‘Sail Away’. Aeroplane + The Rapture = STENCH OF WIN. Big up Dave.

The Rapture – Sail Away (Aeroplane Remix) (right click to download)

And this last tune came via Mark Johnston, one half of the FAUX DJs. What happens when you cross Friendly Fires with Tiga? AWESOME THINGS, that’s what. This is a reworking of ‘Blue Cassette’, and it’s hella mighty.

Friendly Fires – Blue Cassette (Tiga Remix) (right click to download)

Hope you enjoy the tracks, and as always, if you want to come down to the club tonight, hit us up on Facebook or Twitter for guest list. Yeahhh.

It’s that time of the week again, where you need to put the madness of Friday and Saturday night behind you, and melt into the calm abyss that is Sunday Afternoon. Here are a few tunes to help you on your way into an sweet kind of oblivion, you know, like an eternity of tea, biscuits and crosswords.

This first tune is the only one of the selection that I’m responsible for. It’s by a band called Memoryhouse. They remind me a fair bit of Beach House. This track is called ‘Bonfire’, and I like it. I could find out more about the band, but I’m not in the mood. That will become a theme of this post…

Memory House – Bonfire (right click to download)

…the next song was picked out by Claire Ward, albeit inadvertently. She asked for this band at Gigantic the other week. I didn’t have them, so she messaged me the song. If you thought New Look was just a shop in town, think again, they’re actually a band too, and they’re responsible for this song ‘The Ballad’. It reminds me of College ‘A Real Hero’. Once again, I know nothing about this band, so if you want to know more, away and Google them ya lazy shite.

New Look – The Ballad (right click to download)

The last track was also inadvertently picked out, this time by Shauna McErlaine. It’s called ‘In Your Eyes’ and it’s but an outfit called Tesla Boy. I know absolutely nothing about this apart from it’s a good song. Once again, I could find out more, but it’s Sunday and I’m feeling mega lazy, so I’m afraid you’ll have to do your own research.

Aww yeahhh, the big man is back. Not Ian Paisley, he’s barred after that time he drank too many jager bombs, tried to feel up one of the glass collectors, and then was sick all over his own tie and shirt. Not a pretty sight. No, I’m talking about the other big man – Andy Campbell. The last time he DJ’d at GIGANTIC there were reports of women throwing their underwear at him, and men trying to become his best mate. It was weird. The music *was* awesome though, just check out his previous set list a few blog posts back.

Anyway, we’re super stoked that he is taking up the helm at GIGANTIC again, so we asked him to pick out a few songs that are tickling his fandangle at the moment. You can always rely on Randy to pick out a few beauties, and this time is no exception. His choices are posted up below. If you’re in Belfast tonight you should totally go along and see enjoy his set. He has reliably informed us that if you go up to him and whisper the keyword ‘Galavant’ in his ear, he’ll give you a kiss on the cheek. Guaranteed.

Enjoy the tunes, and if you want guest list for the club hit us up on our Facebook or Twitter accounts. Booya!
