It’s All In The Finish

Is there some sort of saying based around things being judged on how they finish, not on how they start? If there isn’t, there damn well should be. Early on at Gigantic last night it seemed like it was going to be a bit of a quiet one, and to be quite frank I was a wee tiny bit depressed about it. Every week since it opened has been a total buzz, and I thought this was going to be the dreaded slow week.
Of course, I never learn that the start of the night is no indication whatsoever of how it is going to end up, and once again the club turned into a random party time. This is largely due to the fact that a load of lovely peeps turned up and danced themselves silly. Hollas at Bryony on her birthday, she brought a ton of random Scottish people who asked for Van Halen, Earth, Wind & Fire, and a bunch of other random stuff. Loved it. Also party monster Philly Taggart and his birthday bunch, more about him later. Great to see Jodie so amazingly drunk, and Julie who joined her in that state not long after. Rebecca can be credited with ensuring my own descent into inebriation, and a spot of raving. Also shout outs to the ever-singing Beth, that guy in the photo with the baseball cap and moustache who danced like a champ all night, plus much love to Nintendo DS, Ian, Andy, Shirlow, Condie, Christina, Lyndsey (who made good shouts for Crystal Castles and Pixies), Niall, Chops, Omar, Rheda, Chris, Brian, John, Beca, Steve and anyone else who I have forgot.
There were a few key tracks that stuck out for me during the night. First off is The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart ‘Heart In Your Heartbreak’. I was playing it in the car while distributing mags earlier in the day, and I actually said to myself ‘I’d love to play that at peak time later’. Of course, I forgot about it completely. Then Philly Taggart came up at about 1am and gave me a choice of three birthday tunes, all pretty inappropriate for that time of night. One of them was this tune. I just thought ‘Yesss! Bring it on!’. It went down really well, and was a pretty funny juxtaposition to Van Halen ‘Jump’ which I had been playing just before.

Speaking of juxtaposition, I had a request for Jeff Mills ‘The Bells’. Now, this is a proper old school techno anthem. Like, I danced to this in the Art College in 1996. Apparently it was a request for this girls 18th Birthday, which would have made her like three years old when it came out. Spoofing or not, I still dropped it. People raved, then I followed it up immediately with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. There’s a pretty good chance those two songs haven’t been played side-by-side before. Only in Belfast, eh?

The last track is a wee quickie. Chops had asked for anything by Beastie Boys Didn’t need much encouragement really, love that band. Decided to play ‘Girls’. Of course, he was out smoking whenever I played it and he missed it completely. Still, it’s the thought that counts.

Yo! Welcome to the GIGANTIC blog. The primary purpose of this place is to promote music that we’re into, and that we’d like other people to hear too. We want to try and help break new bands and tracks, and also like to dig up old classics that we think need more exposure. Essentially, we want to help makes tunes Gigantic. Of course, we do enjoy throwing out the big pop and electro bangers as well, we’re not music snobs.
