HoliBlog #6: NYE = Midnight City

New Years Eve was always going to be a big night. Lavery’s is super busy at the best of times, but NYE promised to be another level altogether. It delivered too, and the whole club was sold out by 10.30pm. Boom! This meant that it was full on from about five minutes after the door opened. The set was an absolute blast to play, and it went in all kinds of directions – from indie to hip-hop, to banging dance and dubstep.
The total highlight of course was the midnight tune. I’d been building up to it for weeks, and telling anyone who would listen to me exactly what I would be playing when the clocks chimed 12. Lavery’s had prepared a countdown that was on all the TV screens in the club from 11pm, and there were confetti canons ready to blast off at the right moment. Everything went according to plan, and after the big cheer and hug I played M83 ‘Midnight City’. It is easily my favourite song of 2011, and being able to play it to a packed house on NYE was quite possibly one of the highlights of my whole DJ career.

I was a bit worried about how it would go down, as even though it’s a big tune, it’s not universally popular. I was over the moon when people came up thanking me for playing it, and said that it made their night. Quite a few folks also came up and said that they loved Azealia Banks ‘212’ getting played as well. Chuffed with that also.
Apart from M83, the other tune I enjoyed dropping the most was Inner City ‘Good Life’. I pretended I wasn’t going to play it when it was requested, but then dropped it just as the person was walking away. It went down a treat.

I’m not sure any NYE 12 o’clock tune will ever top ‘Midnight City’, but we’ll see what happens it 2012, eh?

Yo! Welcome to the GIGANTIC blog. The primary purpose of this place is to promote music that we’re into, and that we’d like other people to hear too. We want to try and help break new bands and tracks, and also like to dig up old classics that we think need more exposure. Essentially, we want to help makes tunes Gigantic. Of course, we do enjoy throwing out the big pop and electro bangers as well, we’re not music snobs.
