He’s Like The Wind

Another solid night at GIGANTIC. It’s always a bit quieter in the club during the summer (bar the randomly Big Friday, of course) due to people being away on holiday and loads of students spending their break in their hometown. This means it takes a bit longer for the place to fill up, which in turns means I spend a bit more of my night having a wee stress. It’s silly really, as it always gets there in the end, with last night being no exception. But as I have previously documented, I just can’t help it.

Anyway, during the quiet period at the start of the night, I always end up bending the ear clean off Tamara (officially the best bar person in Lavs. FACT.) and she returns the favour by making tons of good requests. Last night she literally shouted about ten requests at me in a row. All welcome, of course, as her taste in music is great. I played nearly every one, but my favourite of the night was definitely this track. It’s the latest song from disco-drenched post-punk darlings The Rapture. I’ve actually heard the album via the AU Magazine stereo, and it’s hella good. Bit more funk flowing through it than the last record. This is ‘How Deep Is Your Love’, and it’s six and a half minutes of piano laden brilliance.

Now, something weird happened during the middle of the night. Gander, who is a regular of the club, came up and asked for Patrick Swayze ‘She’s Like The Wind. No one has ever requested it before, and it was the last thing I expected to be asked for. However, I actually had the track in my collection as we used to have a bit of an obsession with it in the office. The club was still filling up, so I thought ‘What the hell, I’m going to fire it on and see what happens’. I kind of expected people to possibly groan, and definitely give funny looks. What I didn’t expect was for loads of people to start singing along and slow dancing with each other! Bear in mind, it’s not even midnight yet. I think the image of Luke Godson and Gander dancing with their arms around each other, while singing their wee hearts out, is right up there with my favourite GIGANTIC images of all time. I might end a night with this song some day.

The last track I am posting today is a bit of an old one, but it’s something that was requested loads before, but I didn’t have it in my collection. I picked it up the other week, and I just can’t get enough of it. Nik Bannon can take the credit for this one, and Kim Barclay a bit too. They both pestered me to play a Robyn track that wasn’t ‘Konichiwa Bitches’ loads of times, and I’m only getting around to it now. My bad. Will probably end up playing this every week too, it’s mega.
