Gigantic Friday 13th: Unlucky my bum

Apparently Friday 13th is an unlucky day. I was born on the 13th, and turned 13 on Friday 13th, and that day I won £13 on 13 10p scratch cards, so I actually think it’s a pretty lucky day. Friday January 13th 2012 at Gigantic also turned out to be a lucky one. First off, there was a bus load of about 100+ people up from Dublin for some private dinner/party thing before the club started. This meant the room was pretty full for when the club kicked off, and they were already well on their way to drunken party town. Next, there was a humungous guest list, with loads of friendly faces on it and a great crew of nice peeps out to party. Finally, DJ Dom Brogan called by for an impromptu visit, and we ended up DJing back-to-back for the last two hours or so.
The place was completely heaving, and I figured it would be a good idea to get drunk and leave the car. Cue lots of vodka and even more dancing. It was belter, think I danced as much behind the decks as I would have out on the dance floor. There were loads of good requests made, and we managed to play a bit of everything. Dom kicked off with At The Drive-In ‘One Armed Scissor’, which we didn’t think was going down very well so we cut it short. As soon as we did, Emma-Rose McGrady stormed up to the front of the DJ box to give off about cutting it, then Jess Whitall came up and started giving us a hard time too. Then Greg McGeady came up later on and mentioned about it being cut short too. Whoops on that front I guess! You know what went down amazingly well too? Sum 41 ‘Fat Lip’. Loads of people were singing along like mentalists, including The Wonder Villains. For a minute it did feel like we had turned into The Limelight, but then we dropped some mental beats and the balance was restored.
One of the standout tune highlights of the night for me was definitely Prince ‘Controversy’. It was requested by Aaron Brown, and with Prince there is always a temptation to play ‘Kiss’ or ‘Raspberry Beret’ as they’re the big hits, but in all seriousness I prefer controversy. It just has such a groove.

Another big track was The Isley Brothers ‘Shout’. It was Dom’s pick, and he asked me if I knew what it was. I didn’t think I knew it, then when he dropped it I was like ‘Oh! That tune!’ It’s an absolute monster, and people went bananas to it. Inspired choice.

And the last song I’m going to post up is Hall & Oates ‘I Can’t Go For That’. This version is the pseudonym edit, which is actually another track which came via Dom. There were a few guys who had been asking for Hall & Oates all night, and I forgot to play it. We had actually stopped the music and were planning on finishing up when I heard them in the crowd chanting ‘Hall & Oates! Hall & Oates!’. I couldn’t resist it, and quickly stuck on this tune. It was a cracking way to end, even if I did have to cut it short as the managers were going to kill me for running late. Managed to get a bit of a dance in to it though. A brilliant ending to a super night.

Yo! Welcome to the GIGANTIC blog. The primary purpose of this place is to promote music that we’re into, and that we’d like other people to hear too. We want to try and help break new bands and tracks, and also like to dig up old classics that we think need more exposure. Essentially, we want to help makes tunes Gigantic. Of course, we do enjoy throwing out the big pop and electro bangers as well, we’re not music snobs.
